"Her name was Mary Chan Wa......
....She lived in a Hawaiian village in the valley of Olowalu (the little town outside of Lahaina on the way to the airport). When she gave birth she would walk into Lahaina with the baby to be checked by the doctor and then walk back. Some of the babies did not even make it through their first year and they were all buried there next to each other in this grave site."
One of our traditions in Hawaii is to have a "1st year baby luau". It is a huge family celebration when our children turn one year old. There is lots of Hawaiian food, children music and fun. This tradition was established because in the olden days so many babies did not make it their first year (like the ones in this grave site), so when one did make it to 1 year old, the village threw a huge party for the child."
