Our first stop on safari after 30 hours of travel from San Francisco was the Mala Mala Game Reserve in South Africa. On the first game drive we saw a pride of lions feeding on a giraffe it killed several days before. On the morning of our departure we saw 15 Spotted Hyenas feasting on the giraffe carcass.

By the second day at Mala Mala we had already seen "the big five," which are the five most coveted animals for trophy hunters -- lion, leopard, rhino, cape buffalo and elephant. We saw a white rhino with a very young calf the first night. We also saw several other rhinos but they were either too far away or in the bush so I didn't get any good pictures. Mala Mala was the only reserve that we visited that had rhino.

We also saw Dan Marino, a sports hero of mine, which made the stay at Mala Mala a little more special to me.

When we left Mala Mala we had the feeling that "it's all downhill from here".

Boy were we wrong about that!
Impala were the most common....Steenbok....Zebra coming!.....our guide Warren of Durban, SA....the ubiquitous Yellow-Billed Hornbill....Nyala on our doorstep....Bateleur Eagle....Bateleur Eagle....Walter Matthau....old bachelor bulls....Kudu....Giraffe....
